Tax collectors gain driving school oversight

Beginning July 1, 2026, Florida’s highway safety department can delegate commercial driving school enforcement to tax collectors through optional agreements. Tax collectors and their agents gain only the powers included in their agreement, limited to commercial driving school enforcement. Agreements can let them ban fraud, deceit, and school business practices that undermine driver license issuance. They can bar school licensees and agents from tax collector premises, including parking areas, except when seeking services for themselves. Agreements can require school licensees and agents to show relevant licenses, agent identification cards, and certificates on demand. Law enforcement officers, department employees, and tax collector employees can demand these documents under that authority. Agreements can also allow entry onto school premises to check compliance with state and local driving school laws.
