Bigger school tax break for Troup seniors

Beginning January 1, 2026, if voters approve on November 4, 2025, seniors 65+ in the Troup County school district can exempt $100,000 of their home’s assessed value from school taxes for education. Your home must be your main residence on no more than two connected acres. You and any spouse living there must have combined income of $50,000 or less for the prior year. Income includes Social Security, pensions, retirement, and disability benefits. Any value above $100,000 stays taxable. The exemption ends on December 31 of the year you sell, transfer the home, or die.

Local vote on senior school tax break

The law requires Troup County to hold a referendum on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Voters will decide whether to raise the senior homestead school tax exemption to $100,000 and the income cap to $50,000. If a majority votes Yes, the change takes effect January 1, 2026. If it fails or the election is not held as required, the Act is repealed one year after the election date. The county pays election costs. The election superintendent must publish notice once a week for two weeks, run the election, certify results to the Secretary of State, and can be ordered by a court to do so.
