The law lets eligible farm goods and recovered materials move at up to 10% over normal weight limits. The trip must stay within 150 miles of the farm or starting point and be outside a nonattainment area as of May 3, 2023. Both the tractor and trailer must be certified for the higher weight, and you cannot use a lift axle to raise the total gross weight under this allowance. Fines for going past the 10% are based on the normal limits. This allowance ends July 1, 2025.
Trained local police and state troopers can stop, weigh, measure, and inspect trucks on public roads, and check licensing, fuel tax registration, and tags. They can ticket overweight vehicles on county truck routes and on bridges with posted limits; local bridge tickets are limited to county or city roads. If the required signs are missing or not kept up, the first violation is a warning and later violations can get a ticket. Drivers must keep any oversize or overweight permit in the vehicle and show it on request. Refusing a lawful stop is a misdemeanor with a fine up to $200, a bond up to $400, and up to a 90‑day license suspension; by applying for or renewing a Georgia license, you agree to stop when ordered. The Department of Transportation sets size and weight rules and issues permits, while the Department of Public Safety and trained local officers handle enforcement.
