Protective orders now protect household pets

In family or dating violence cases, the court can also protect household pets. After a verified petition is filed, a judge can give one party possession, care, custody, and control of the pet. The judge can order the other person not to harass, harm, take, transfer, encumber, or hide the pet, and not to violate Georgia’s animal-cruelty law. Pets covered are companion animals. Livestock, lab animals, working or sport animals, and animals kept for business or food are not covered.
