Free plates for disabled veterans, two-vehicle cap

Beginning January 1, 2026, eligible Georgia veterans with total or qualifying disabilities get free license plates or decals. The benefit covers cars, motorcycles, pickups, station wagons, or vans up to three-quarter ton, for up to two vehicles total. Veterans with a permanent disability give one VA letter; if not permanent, a new VA letter is required each year. If you are not VA-certified, you can submit discharge papers and a doctor’s statement to the Department of Veterans Service for review. Plates show “Disabled Veteran” and the accessibility symbol at least one inch tall. The cap is two free vehicles per eligible veteran.

New specialty plates support parks and causes

Georgia adds new optional specialty plates. Starting July 1, 2025, a Shepherd Center plate is available. Starting January 1, 2026, plates are available for Georgia veterans and families, Southern University alumni, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Alabama State University alumni, state parks and historic sites, and black bass conservation. Buyers pay the specialty plate fee; money goes to the named groups and programs. The state parks plate has no county decal space and says “Georgia State Parks.”
