Newnan now offers a homestead exemption that shields increases in your home’s assessed value above a base year. It applies only to City of Newnan property taxes for municipal purposes, not county, school, or city bond debt taxes. Your base year is the tax year before you first get the exemption as the current owner. The break does not cover new improvements or land added after January 1 of the base year, and only up to five contiguous acres count; if you remove land, the base year is adjusted. You must file an application with the City; once approved, it renews each year while you live there, and you must tell the City if you stop qualifying. If more than one base‑year exemption could apply, the tax office uses the one that saves you the most. The exemption applies for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2026, only if Newnan voters approve it in the election held the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2025.
