Colquitt homeowners get $10,000 county tax break

Beginning January 1, 2027, if county voters approve it in 2026, the law exempts $10,000 of your home's assessed value from Colquitt County taxes for county purposes. It does not cut state, school, city, or county bonded‑debt taxes. This replaces the standard county homestead exemption for this purpose and can stack with other county‑purpose homestead breaks. Your homestead for this break can include up to five contiguous acres. Apply once with the Colquitt County tax commissioner; it renews each year while you live there, and you must tell the office if you stop qualifying.

2026 vote decides county tax break

The county election superintendent must place the question on the 2026 general primary ballot. If a majority vote YES, the $10,000 county homestead exemption starts January 1, 2027. If the question fails or the election is not held as required, the exemption does not start and the Act is repealed one year after the election. Colquitt County pays the election costs and the results must be certified.
