Drone flights banned near events

The law bans flying a drone within 400 feet of or above a ticketed entertainment event. Breaking this rule is a misdemeanor. A ticketed entertainment event means music, sports, or performing arts behind gates or barriers that require a revocable license to enter. You may fly with consent from the event authority, if federal law authorizes it, if you are on-duty staff for the property, or if you are an on-duty utility worker. A private property owner may fly over their own land if they follow federal rules and do not do commercial work, send messages, record for commercial broadcast or publication, or monitor or interfere with the event. The law also defines what counts as a drone: a powered, pilotless aircraft that uses lift; satellites are not included.

State limits local drone rules

The state blocks most local rules on testing or flying drones. Local governments can still enforce drone rules they adopted on or before April 1, 2017. They can also pass local laws that mirror FAA drone limits. Cities and counties may allow or ban takeoffs and landings on their public property for noncommercial use. State agencies can set rules for drone takeoffs and landings on state-owned property.
