Walker County seniors get school tax breaks

Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, seniors in the Walker County school district get new homestead tax exemptions. If you are 70–74 on Jan. 1 of the year you apply, you can exempt $50,000 of assessed value. If you are 75+ on Jan. 1 and have lived in the district 5+ years, you can exempt your home’s full assessed value. An unremarried surviving spouse can keep the break if age 67+ (for the partial) or 70+ (for the full) and still lives in the home. You must apply with the Walker County tax commissioner; it renews each year while you live there, and you must report if you stop qualifying. This only reduces the Walker County school district part of your property tax bill, not state, county, city, or other school taxes. It replaces, and does not stack with, other Walker County school-district homestead exemptions. These exemptions take effect only if voters approve them on Nov. 2, 2026.
