Walnut Grove gives a new homestead exemption that lowers your city property tax bill. Each year, your exemption equals the amount your home’s assessed value is above your adjusted base year value. The adjusted base year can only rise by the prior‑year inflation rate plus 0.25 percentage points, plus any value from major property changes. The state revenue commissioner sets the inflation rate used for this cap. For first‑time grants in 2026, the base year is your 2024 assessed value. This exemption only applies to City of Walnut Grove taxes and cannot be combined with another city base‑year exemption; the city must use the one that gives you the bigger tax cut.
You must apply with the City of Walnut Grove to get this homestead exemption. If you had a homestead exemption for 2025 and still qualify in 2026, you get it automatically for 2026. The exemption renews each year while you live in the home as your homestead. You must tell the city if you no longer qualify. A surviving spouse who stays in the home keeps the exemption.
The city homestead exemption only takes effect if more than half of voters approve it in a Walnut Grove election on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2025. If approved, it applies to tax years starting January 1, 2026. If voters do not approve it, or the vote is not held, the exemption does not take effect and is repealed 365 days after that election date.
