Cherokee hotel tax up to 8% for tourism

Cherokee County can charge an excise tax on hotel, motel, and campground stays, up to 8%. The county sets the exact rate, but it cannot be higher than 8%. Lodging businesses must collect and send the tax. When this tax is collected, the part above what a 5% rate would bring must follow strict uses. At least half of that extra money funds tourism promotion through the county’s destination marketing group, and the rest funds tourism product development.
