School tax break for Spalding seniors

The law gives a homestead school-tax break to Spalding County seniors age 65 or older. You must live in the home (up to five contiguous acres) in the Spalding County school district. If last year’s household income (you plus a spouse living in the home) was $25,000 or less, your school-tax assessment is cut 100%. If income was over $25,000 up to $53,000, it is cut 50%; if over $53,000, it is cut 25%. Income follows Georgia tax rules; Social Security and most pensions or disability pay are excluded up to the Social Security max, but amounts above that count. Apply with the Spalding County tax commissioner; once approved, it renews while you live there. It applies only to Spalding school taxes for education, not bond taxes or state, county, city, or independent school taxes. It begins January 1, 2026, if voters approve it in the November 2025 election.

Voter approval for Spalding school tax break

The exemption goes to voters in the Spalding County school district on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2025. If a majority votes yes, the exemption takes effect January 1, 2026. If voters reject it or the election is not run as required, the exemption does not take effect and is repealed 365 days after the election date. Spalding County pays the election costs. The election superintendent must publish notice for two weeks, run the election under state law, and certify results to the Secretary of State.
