Cherokee County: no school tax for seniors, disabled

The law gives a full exemption from Cherokee County school district property tax on your homestead. You must live in the district and be 62 or older or disabled. You or your spouse must have had a homestead exemption in the district for at least five years before you apply; the years do not have to be back-to-back. If you already had this exemption under the prior law, or you are the surviving spouse of someone who had it, you qualify without the five-year rule. The law does not use an income test for this exemption. This change takes effect only after voters approve it in a countywide election; if approved, it starts January 1 after that vote.

Voters must approve the school tax break

Cherokee County must put this question on the ballot by the November 2026 general election. If most voters approve, the exemption starts on January 1 after that vote. If voters do not approve, or the election is not held, the exemption never takes effect and the act is repealed on July 1, 2027. Cherokee County pays for the election. The election superintendent must certify results to the Secretary of State.
