Bigger school tax break for Butts seniors

If you live in the Butts County School District, are 62 or older, and own your home, you get a bigger school tax break. The homestead exemption for school taxes rises from $15,000 to $50,000 of assessed value. There is no income limit. You still pay tax on value above $50,000. The increase takes effect January 1, 2027 if voters approve it in the 2026 referendum.

2026 vote required to approve tax break

The county must hold a referendum on the 2026 general primary date. It must publish notice for two weeks and use the set Yes/No ballot. Butts County pays the election costs and must certify results to the Secretary of State. If a majority votes Yes, the tax break starts January 1, 2027. If voters reject it or the election is not held, the act repeals 365 days after the set election date. Any voter can ask a court to order officials to hold the vote.
