Fulton seniors get 50% school tax break

The law gives a 50% homestead exemption on Fulton County School District property taxes for seniors age 70 or older. To qualify, you must own and live in the home and have had a homestead exemption in the district for five of the last six years. The exemption applies to up to five contiguous acres and is figured after other homestead exemptions. It cuts only Fulton County school taxes, not state, county, city, or independent school district taxes. File once with the Fulton County tax commissioner; it renews each year while you live there, and you must report if you become ineligible. You cannot stack this with other senior-only school-tax exemptions, but you can keep other homestead exemptions. It begins with 2026 school taxes if voters approved it in November 2025.

Fulton vote on school tax exemption

The law required a countywide vote on November 4, 2025 to approve the senior school-tax exemption. If more than half voted Yes, the exemption took effect January 1, 2026. If voters did not approve, it did not take effect and the Act is repealed 365 days after the election. Fulton County pays the election costs, officials had to publish notice and certify results, and courts can order the election if duties are not performed.
