Chickamauga seniors get $50K city tax break

Beginning with the 2026 tax year, Chickamauga seniors get a $50,000 homestead exemption from city property taxes, if voters approve it on November 4, 2025. You qualify if you are 70 or older, have lived in the city at least five years as of January 1 of the year you claim, and the homestead is up to five contiguous acres. It applies only to city taxes (including city debt); city tax still applies to value above $50,000, and state, county, and school taxes are unchanged. This replaces other city homestead exemptions and cannot be stacked. An unremarried surviving spouse age 67 or older can keep it if they live in the home. File an initial application with the City or its designee; after that, it renews each year while you occupy the home, and you must notify the City if you become ineligible.

Citywide vote on senior tax break

The City holds a vote on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 to approve the senior homestead exemption. If more than half vote yes, the exemption takes effect January 1, 2026; if not, it does not take effect and the Act is repealed 365 days later. The election superintendent must publish notice twice in the county paper and certify results to the Secretary of State. The City pays the election costs.
