Bigger homestead tax break for Butts County seniors

The law raises the senior homestead exemption from $4,000 to $20,000 of assessed value for Butts County residents age 62 or older who own and live in the home. The $20,000 is exempt from all county property taxes; value above that still pays tax. Your yearly savings equals the county tax rate times up to $20,000. The referendum is held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2025. The exemption starts January 1, 2026, only if voters approve; if not, the change does not take effect and this Act repeals one year later.

County pays for 2025 referendum

Butts County pays the costs to run the November 2025 referendum on this tax change. The law puts the election expense on county funds. It does not set the amount.
