Beginning January 1, 2026, the City of Brunswick offers a new homestead break on city property taxes, if voters approved it in 2025. The exempt share of your home’s assessed value grows with how long you owned it: 5% (5 years or less); 10% (6–10 years); 20% (11–20 years); 30% (21–29 years); 50% (30+ years). The city still taxes the rest of the value. This does not affect county, school, or state taxes and does not cover taxes used to repay bonds. It stacks with other city homestead exemptions. You must apply with the City. It renews each year while you live there, and you must tell the City if you become ineligible. A surviving spouse who keeps living in the home keeps the exemption.
The City of Brunswick holds a referendum on November 4, 2025. If more than half vote yes, the city homestead exemption begins January 1, 2026. If the majority does not approve or the election is not run as required, the exemption does not start and the Act is repealed 365 days after the election date. The City pays the cost of the election, must publish notices, use the stated ballot text, and certify results to the Secretary of State. Any voter can ask a court to force the superintendent to follow these rules.
