Beginning January 1, 2026, Oglethorpe County seniors age 67 or older can get a school tax break on their home. It exempts the increase in your homestead’s assessed value above the “base year” value, which is the year before you first qualify. It applies only to school district taxes for education, not to school bond debt, and the homestead is limited to up to one-half contiguous acre. Improvements or extra land added after the base year stay taxable; if land is removed, the base value is adjusted. You must apply with the Oglethorpe County tax commissioner; after approval, it renews each year while you still qualify. You cannot combine this with other school homestead exemptions.
Oglethorpe County must hold a vote no later than November 4, 2025 on the senior school tax exemption. If most voters say yes, the exemption starts January 1, 2026; if not, the law is repealed 365 days after the election. The election superintendent must publish the date and purpose for two weeks and certify the results to the Secretary of State. Oglethorpe County pays the election costs, and any voter can ask a court to require officials to carry out these duties.
