The law exempts your homestead from all City of Woodstock property taxes for city purposes. You must be at least age 62 and live in Woodstock. You or your spouse must have had a Woodstock homestead exemption for at least five years before you apply. The years do not have to be in a row. If you had the older Woodstock exemption before the law’s cutoff, you keep the full exemption each year you are a senior, without the five-year rule. A surviving spouse of someone who had this exemption also gets the full exemption on their Woodstock homestead while a senior, without the five-year rule.
Woodstock must hold a referendum on this exemption on an allowed special election date, no later than the November 2026 general election. The election official must publish the date and purpose twice before the vote and certify results to the Secretary of State. If more than half of voters approve, the exemption in Section 1 starts on January 1 after the election. If it fails or the vote is not held as required, Section 1 does not take effect and the Act is repealed on July 1, 2027. The City of Woodstock pays the cost of the election, and any Woodstock voter can ask a court to order the election if the official refuses to hold it.
