Beginning with the 2027 tax year, homeowners in the Lowndes County school district get a $12,000 homestead exemption from the district’s education property tax. It does not cover taxes used to pay school bonds and replaces any other school‑district homestead exemption; it does not affect state, other county school, or city property taxes. You must live in the district and use the home as your homestead; most people must apply with the Lowndes County tax commissioner. If you had the old $6,000 school exemption under the 1980 law, you get the $12,000 amount automatically. The exemption renews each year while the home stays your homestead, and you must tell the tax commissioner if you stop qualifying. The law takes effect only if voters approve it in the 2026 general primary.
