Bigger school tax break for Dalton seniors

The law raises the homestead exemption for Dalton school taxes to $325,000 for homeowners age 70 or older, up from $150,000. It applies to the assessed value of your primary home; value above $325,000 stays taxable. Voters must approve the question in the election on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2025. If a majority votes yes, the higher exemption starts January 1, 2026. Your savings depend on the school millage rate and your home’s assessed value.

Local vote on senior tax exemption

The election superintendent must hold a vote on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2025. The ballot asks whether to approve the $325,000 senior homestead exemption for Dalton school taxes. The City of Dalton pays the election costs, and results are certified to the Secretary of State. If more than half vote yes, the exemption takes effect January 1, 2026. If the vote fails or is not held as required, the act is repealed 365 days after the election. Any voter can ask a court to order the superintendent to perform these duties.
