Bigger school tax break for Coweta seniors

Coweta County School District seniors get larger homestead exemptions from school property taxes. Ages 65–70: $75,000 off the assessed value. Ages 71–74: $100,000 off. Age 75 or older: a full exemption of the home’s assessed value. Only the exempt amount is removed; any value above it is still taxed. These exemptions apply beginning January 1, 2026, only if voters approved them in the November 2025 election.

How seniors claim the school tax break

To get the exemption, you or your agent must file an affidavit with the Coweta County tax commissioner stating your age. The tax commissioner provides the form and can ask for information to check eligibility now and later. This filing rule applies beginning January 1, 2026, only if voters approved the measure in November 2025.

Vote sets start date for exemptions

The law requires a countywide vote on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2025. If a majority voted Yes, the higher exemptions start January 1, 2026. If voters rejected it or the election was not run as required, the change does not start and the Act is repealed 365 days after the election. The election superintendent must run and advertise the election, certify results to the Secretary of State, and the county pays the cost. A court can order the superintendent to comply if needed.
