Bigger city tax break for Dalton seniors

The law raises the City of Dalton homestead exemption for seniors from $150,000 to $325,000 of assessed value. It applies to residents age 70 or over on their occupied homestead. Any value above $325,000 stays taxable for city purposes. If a majority of Dalton voters approve the required referendum by the November 2026 general election, the increase starts January 1, 2027. If voters do not approve or the election is not held as required, the increase does not take effect and this act is repealed 365 days after the election date. Your yearly city tax savings equal the exempt amount times the city tax rate.

Dalton vote required on senior tax break

The law requires Dalton’s municipal election superintendent to hold a citywide vote on the exemption increase by the November 2026 general election, on a permitted special election date. The notice must run in the Whitfield County legal newspaper once a week for two weeks, with set Yes/No ballot wording. The superintendent must certify results to the Secretary of State, and courts can order compliance if needed. The City of Dalton pays the election costs. State law also requires a two‑thirds vote in both chambers for this kind of local tax exemption measure.
