Qualified, independent school auditor for Cherokee

The school board appoints the internal auditor from names sent by state lawmakers who represent the district. The auditor must be a Certified Internal Auditor or a CPA with at least five years of experience. The auditor does not have to live in the district. The auditor may not take part in partisan politics or school system political affairs. With board approval and within the budget and personnel rules, the auditor can hire and remove staff for the office.

Stronger school audits in Cherokee County

The law creates an internal audit office for the Cherokee County school system. The auditor runs yearly and five‑year performance and financial audits across all departments and activities. The auditor gets immediate access to records, data, property, and contractor records paid with school funds. The auditor must send a yearly report to the school board and local state lawmakers. Audit reports are public at a reasonable copying cost, but confidential details stay private and go to closed board sessions. The auditor may speak to the board after the superintendent’s report at any meeting.

Local funds pay Cherokee audit costs

All auditor costs are paid from the school district’s local funds, often property tax dollars. The audit section ends July 1, 2030, unless lawmakers extend it. Any older laws that conflict with this Act are repealed.
