Cherokee County grants an extra homestead exemption on county property taxes. It is funded by a local homestead sales tax and can cover up to 100% of your county tax bill. It starts January 1 after the first full year that tax is collected, and only after voters approve it. You must apply with the county tax commissioner and provide your age and other details. The exemption renews while you live there and does not reduce state, school, or city property taxes.
This law takes effect only if the state passes, in 2025, a law allowing the alternative homestead sales tax. If the state does not pass that law, this Act is repealed on July 1, 2025. The Act also repeals any state laws that conflict with it.
Cherokee County holds a special vote on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. The ballot asks whether to allow a homestead exemption of up to 100% of county taxes, paid by a local sales tax. The county must publish notice twice before the vote and pay the election costs. If a majority votes Yes, the exemption can take effect as set in law. If the election official will not hold the vote, any voter can ask a court to order it; if voters reject it or rules aren’t met, Section 1 never takes effect and the Act is repealed 365 days after the election.
