Bigger homestead exemption for Cohutta seniors

If you are a Cohutta homeowner age 70 or older, you can exempt $325,000 of your home's assessed value from city property taxes. Any value above $325,000 stays taxable. The exemption only applies to your occupied homestead. It takes effect on January 1 after Cohutta voters approve it.

Cohutta voters decide senior tax break

The City of Cohutta must hold a vote in November 2025 on the homestead exemption. The superintendent must publish the date and purpose once a week for the two weeks before the vote. The city pays the costs and must certify results to the Secretary of State. Any voter can ask a court to force the election if officials do not comply. If voters do not approve, or the election is not held as required, the Act is repealed on January 1, 2026.
