Voters must approve this on November 3, 2026 for it to take effect. From January 1, 2028 through 2032, if you own and live in a Cartersville homestead and are 65+ or totally disabled, your school property taxes go down. Exemption amounts are: ages 65–69 or totally disabled: $60,000; 70–74: $80,000; 75–79: $100,000; 80+: $200,000. Your age is set on January 1 of the tax year. This applies only to City of Cartersville school taxes and ends after December 31, 2032.
The city must hold an election on November 3, 2026 to approve or reject the homestead school tax break. The city pays the cost, must publish two weeks of notices, use the exact ballot, and certify results to the Secretary of State. The exemptions start January 1, 2028 only if more than half vote Yes. If not approved or the election is not run as required, the change is repealed the next January 1. Voters can ask a court to force compliance.
