3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.
Beginning January 1, 2026, health plans issued or renewed in Georgia cover medically necessary orthotic and prosthetic care. Coverage includes the device, parts and materials, design and fittings, training, and repairs. Plans must treat this like other medical care and cannot add extra, unique cost-sharing. Medical need must follow state rules and national clinical guidelines.
Beginning January 1, 2026, plans must cover replacing a device under three years old if your body has changed, the device is irreparable, or repair would cost more than 60% of a new one. Prosthetic sockets are covered for replacement when there is a documented residual limb change, a change in functional need, irreparable damage, or heavy wear from weight or activity. Provide documentation and cost estimates to qualify.
Starting January 1, 2026, plans must cover up to three devices per affected limb in any three-year period. Plans do not have to repair or replace devices lost, stolen, misused, or damaged by gross neglect or malicious damage. Some plans are not subject to these rules at all: state employee plans, Medicaid services provided under contracts with the Department of Community Health, and self-funded ERISA employer plans.
