Clearer rules for parents on kids' independence

Beginning July 1, 2025, the law defines "blatant disregard" and "independent activity" in Georgia’s Juvenile Code. It updates "neglect" to cover lack of needed care, unsafe supervision that creates a real and immediate risk, and abandonment. Letting a child play, walk to school, run errands, or travel locally without direct supervision is not neglect if a parent or guardian reasonably believes the child is mature and able to stay safe. The reckless conduct law uses these same meanings. Letting independent activities is not a crime for a parent unless it amounts to neglect, but grossly reckless acts that cause or risk harm remain a misdemeanor. These changes apply to offenses committed on or after July 1, 2025.
