Beginning January 1, 2026, if a licensed contractor installs your HVAC system or component, the full warranty term starts on the installation date. Companies cannot make warranty coverage depend on registering the product. If they give a registration card or online form, it must say registration is only for product records and that not returning it does not reduce your rights or shorten the term. These rules apply to warranties and any changes or extensions issued, sold, or offered on or after January 1, 2026.
Beginning January 1, 2026, when you buy a home with an HVAC system or component that is a fixture, any maker’s warranty still in effect transfers to you automatically, as if you were the original buyer. The manufacturer must honor the warranty and cannot charge a transfer fee. The transfer does not add time; only the remaining warranty term carries over. You do not need to take extra steps or pay to make the transfer happen.
