More rural health loans for clinicians

The law expands Georgia’s service-cancelable loan program to grow the rural health workforce. Loans are open to physicians (including residents and fellows), dentists, physician assistants, advanced practice registered nurses, and fourth-year dental students. You must be a U.S. citizen or national; clinicians must be licensed in Georgia, and medical training must be in an ACGME-accredited program. You can repay the loan by agreeing to practice in an underserved rural Georgia area. The program can also give grants to hospitals, local governments, and groups that provide matching funds. When the Board has money, it gives first priority to certain state student loan and scholarship programs named in law.

Funding and limits for teaching hospitals

The state pays teaching hospitals up to $10,000 per resident or fellow each year in ACGME-accredited training. Hospitals must certify trainee counts, and the Board of Health Care Workforce sets the rules for certification and payment. Money comes from annual state funding; if funds are short, all payments are cut by the same percentage. No new hospitals are added to the program until money is set aside for them. The law also clarifies which hospitals qualify, including those with a 24/7 emergency room or a CMS certification number.
