Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Optometrists can dispense eye medicines

Licensed optometrists can now dispense and sell eye-related drugs that are not controlled substances. The optometrist must be on site and take part in the dispensing. They must tell the patient how to use the drug. They must record the drug name, strength, amount, and directions in the chart. They must keep purchase and dispensing logs and follow State Board of Pharmacy rules. The law treats optometrists as practitioners under pharmacy law and removes older rules that conflict.

No new powers for optometrists

This law does not give optometrists any new power to prescribe or perform medical acts. It does not allow them to practice medicine or surgery. Optometrists may use, sell, prescribe, or give drugs only as other laws already allow. Sales of spectacles and other permitted goods stay the same.
