Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

5 provisions identified: 4 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Felony to leak confidential voter data

It is a felony to share voter registration records that are protected by law. A convicted person faces 1 to 10 years in prison, a fine up to $100,000, or both. This strengthens privacy and deters leaks of confidential voter data.

Student directory info off-limits to campaigns

Public schools and anyone acting for them cannot give student directory information to candidates, campaigns, PACs, or political groups. Anyone on school property who helps students register to vote or for Selective Service must sign a written promise not to share directory information with political actors. School staff doing official duties and people at public events do not have to sign. This protects student privacy from political use.

In-school voter registration each April

Eligible public school students are told about their right to register to vote and any Selective Service duty. Each April, schools arrange a chance for eligible students to register to vote at school. A school system may allow one excused day for registration or voting. The State Board of Education issues rules to run this program.

No recruiting minors for banned school events

Candidates, campaigns, and PACs cannot ask anyone under 18 to fraudulently set up a political event on school property. This applies when the event is meant to influence an election or ballot measure and is not allowed by law or school policy. The rule helps protect minors and school safety.

Equal school access for military recruiters

If a public secondary school lets career or education groups visit campus or get student directory information, it must give the same access to official state and U.S. military recruiters. This covers campus visits and directory information, on the same basis as other recruiters. The rule applies only where the school already gives similar access.
