The State Court of Henry County has four judges until January 1, 2026. Starting January 1, 2026, it has five judges. The Governor appoints the new fifth judge first, who serves until December 31, 2028 and until a successor is elected and qualified. Voters elect the successor in a nonpartisan race held with the 2028 general election, and every four years after. Judges in office on January 1, 2025 keep serving their current terms until their successors are elected and qualified.
State law sets the qualifications, limits, and discipline rules for these judges. They have the same powers as other state court judges. The chief judge may appoint a temporary judge (pro hac vice) for up to one year, who must meet the same qualifications as a regular state court judge.
Judges must work full time. Henry County pays each state court judge 90% of the salary paid to Superior Court judges, on the same schedule as other county employees. The longest-serving judge is the chief judge and gets an extra $10,000 each year for administrative duties.
