Atlanta seniors get $50K school tax break

The law exempts $50,000 of your home’s assessed value from City of Atlanta school taxes for education. You must be 65 or older on or before January 1 of the application year and live in the home as your homestead (up to five contiguous acres). You must file an application with the City; after the first filing, it renews each year while you still qualify, and you must notify the City if you stop qualifying. This exemption only lowers City of Atlanta independent school district education taxes and can be used with other homestead breaks. There is a yearly cap of $487.8 million for all exemptions; if total claims exceed the cap, each household’s exemption is cut proportionally. It applies to tax years starting January 1, 2026, only if voters approved it on November 4, 2025.

Voter approval required; repeal if fails

The City must hold a referendum on November 4, 2025 to approve this senior school tax exemption. The superintendent publishes notices, runs the vote, and certifies results; the City pays the costs. If a majority approved the measure, the exemption starts January 1, 2026. If not, the Act is automatically repealed on November 4, 2026.
