Broader definition of law enforcement officers

The law sets one statewide meaning for "law enforcement officer" and applies it to Georgia’s arrest and deadly force rules. It includes peace officers; state or federal officers who help during a Governor-declared emergency or disaster; and newly appointed chiefs or department heads until they finish required training. It also covers people certified as officers in another state while they work for a Georgia agency and stay in good standing, and certain full-time federal officers when asked by a Georgia officer or to prevent imminent death or serious harm. The law repeals conflicting rules to keep the definition consistent statewide.
