Beginning 07/01/2025, Iowa offers a National Guard Service Professional Qualification Scholarship. It helps Iowa Army or Air National Guard members who live in Iowa, finished initial training, and are performing duty satisfactorily. You must enroll in a program on the adjutant general’s approved list at an Iowa community college, regents university, or accredited private college and keep satisfactory academic progress. The scholarship only supports certificates or other competency-based credentials that are not eligible for federal Title IV aid; associate and higher degrees do not qualify. You must tell your school you are in the Guard, complete Iowa College Student Aid Commission forms, apply for all nonrepayable aid, and apply to the adjutant general, whose eligibility decision is final; late applications are accepted if you were on federal active duty at the deadline.
Beginning 07/01/2025, the adjutant general certifies eligibility and award amounts, and the Iowa College Student Aid Commission pays schools after they confirm charges, attendance, and progress. Awards cannot be more than what the school charges for the credential program. If yearly funds are short, the adjutant general and the commission decide how to split the money, so some students may get smaller awards or none. Unused funds for this and related Guard education programs do not revert at year-end; they carry over to the next year under the adjutant general.
