New skills scholarships for Iowa Guard members
Beginning July 1, 2025, Iowa residents serving in Iowa Army or Air National Guard units can get new skills scholarships. Approved certificates and skills credentials qualify at Iowa community colleges, state universities, and accredited private colleges. Associate and higher degrees, and credentials eligible for federal Title IV student aid, do not qualify. Members must complete initial active-duty training, maintain satisfactory duty performance and academic progress, and remain Guard members while receiving payments. They must submit required applications, seek all eligible nonrepayable state and federal aid, and report Guard status when registering. Otherwise eligible members on federal active duty at a deadline must be allowed to apply late. Scholarships go directly to schools after charges, attendance, and academic progress are certified, and cannot exceed the program’s total charge. If funds fall short, the adjutant general decides award distribution with the Iowa College Student Aid Commission. Unspent, uncommitted funds for these and related Guard programs remain available the next budget year under the adjutant general’s authority.
