Iowa bans more synthetic opioids

The law adds 12 synthetic opioids to Schedule I. They include Butonitazene, Flunitazene, several fentanyl analogs, and metonitazepyne and protonitazepyne. Manufacturers, sellers, and possessors in Iowa now face Schedule I criminal controls for these drugs. Two nitazene listings also cover related isomers, esters, ethers, and salts. Effective April 16, 2026.

Two stimulants added to Schedule I

The law adds Dipentylone (N,N-dimethylpentylone) and Ethylphenidate to Schedule I. People who make, sell, or possess them in Iowa now face Schedule I criminal controls. Effective April 16, 2026.

Three Schedule I listings removed

The law removes three entries from the Schedule I list in subsection 9. For those chemicals, Schedule I criminal controls in Iowa no longer apply. People who handle those exact chemicals face fewer Schedule I penalties. Effective April 16, 2026.
