Easier Iowa certification for medication aides

Beginning July 1, 2026, aides certified in another state can get Iowa certification by passing Iowa’s approved medication aide challenge exam. They need no nurse aide exam or extra certification requirements, including prior Iowa employment. Approved competency evaluation programs join area community colleges as challenge exam providers. These programs can also receive the required written statement from people taking the exam instead of a course. The department must adopt rules to carry out the certification law. The law also repeals listed portions of five state rules; the supplied text does not explain those portions’ effects.

Free online exam records for medication aides

Beginning July 1, 2026, Iowa must create a medication aide certification registry on the department’s website. Approved exam providers can submit proof that an aide passed a department-approved medication aide certification exam. The department cannot charge a fee to submit or access that proof.
