False degree claims are a crime

Starting July 1, 2026, it is a crime to knowingly and with intent lie that you have an academic degree or other academic credentials to get a job or other personal gain. This is a fifth-degree fraudulent practice, punished under that level’s penalties. The law protects employers and the public from credential fraud.

False professional license claims are crimes

Starting July 1, 2026, it is a crime to knowingly and with intent lie that you have a state-regulated professional or occupational license to get a job or other personal gain. These cases are punished under the state’s existing penalties for fraudulent practice. The law protects employers, clients, and the public from unlicensed work.
