Beginning July 1, 2025, Iowa employers must treat employees who adopt a child age six or younger the same as birth parents of newborns. Equal treatment covers job policies, benefits, and protections for the first year after the child’s placement. An adoption counts if the permanent placement in Iowa is through the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, a licensed agency, an interstate‑compact agency, or an independent placement. However, disability leave only applies if you have a qualifying disability under your employer’s disability rules. The law does not add new disability leave by itself.
