Two-year deadline for wrongful inheritance transfer claims
Iowa sets a two-year deadline after death to challenge certain asset transfers made outside a will. This applies when the person dies on or after July 1, 2026. Covered claims involve asset ownership, beneficiary choices, or other transfers obtained partly or fully through wrongful conduct. That includes interference with an inheritance, undue influence, fraud, or other wrongful conduct.
Courts can shift costs in estate disputes
In disputed Iowa estate administration cases, courts can award costs, attorney fees, and other expenses to any party. Another party or the estate can be ordered to pay when fairness and justice call for it. Awards are not guaranteed, and attorney fees described in Iowa Code section 633.198 are excluded. This applies to cases involving people who die on or after July 1, 2026.
