Broader traffic privileges for emergency responders
Beginning July 1, 2026, Iowa expands traffic privileges for authorized emergency vehicle drivers and on-duty officers riding police bicycles. Drivers can pass red lights, stop signals, and stop signs after slowing to or maintaining a speed they consider safe. That judgment must use information known at the time. They can also exceed speed limits without recklessly endangering life or property. These new permissions exclude towing vehicles designated as emergency vehicles. Emergency vehicle drivers generally must use a qualifying warning sound or visual signal. Police and reserve officers can speed without either signal for the shortest distance necessary, without recklessly endangering people or property. This applies when pursuing suspected speed violators to measure their speed. It also applies when officers reasonably believe a suspect's awareness could cause escape, danger, or destruction of evidence of a suspected felony or aggravated misdemeanor. Drivers taking patients to a hospital can speed without signals when a certified emergency care provider reasonably believes rapid transport is needed.
Separate emergency driver authority is removed
Beginning July 1, 2026, Iowa removes a separate rule granting traffic privileges to drivers of listed official emergency vehicles. The rule covered fire, police, rescue, ambulance, emergency medical services, and emergency management vehicles. The repeal removes that separate authority, but does not establish which privileges remain available under other rules.
