Clear rules for divorce name changes

Beginning July 1, 2026, if your divorce or annulment decree is entered on or after that date, you can ask the court to change your name in the decree. You can choose only your birth certificate name or the name you used right before the marriage. To take any other name, you must file a separate request under Iowa Code chapter 674. If you ask for your birth or premarital name in the decree, the court issues a separate document showing the name change, and it cannot include any other divorce or annulment details.
