Beginning July 1, 2025, the law expands who counts as a health care provider under Iowa’s assault law. It now covers emergency medical care providers, certain licensed staff when giving emergency care, and people giving health services while working, volunteering, or in training at hospitals, rural emergency hospitals, or nursing facilities. If an assault happens in a hospital, at the scene, or during unofficial out-of-hospital patient transport in an ambulance, the attacker is presumed to know the victim is a health care provider. These changes give broader legal protection to covered workers in those settings.
