Parents keep contact in child welfare cases

Beginning July 1, 2025, family interactions continue during a child in need of assistance case. They continue even if a parent did not follow some court or department rules. Contact stops or changes only if a court or the department finds it would be harmful to the child. A court can limit, deny, or require supervision when there is substantial evidence of a serious risk of physical or emotional harm.
