How Iowa school grades are set

Beginning July 1, 2025, the Department of Education calculates each attendance center’s grade with a new achievement score that blends student growth and proficiency. The profiles also include a closing gap score to show subgroup performance. Other academic indicators used in the profiles and the unofficial part of the grade include graduation, attendance, and college‑readiness rates; more data like suspensions, student engagement, parent feedback, and staff working conditions may be added. If a student returns after dropping out and leaves again, that later dropout does not lower the school’s grade. The grade can classify schools into six levels—exceptional, high performing, commendable, acceptable, needs improvement, and priority—and guide extra support or recognition.
