Penalties for faking service animals

Beginning July 1, 2025, it is a crime in Iowa to falsely claim an animal is a service animal or in training. A charge is allowed only if all three are true: the person claims it to get rights or access under state or federal law; the person already got a written or verbal warning that this is illegal; and the person knows the animal is not a service animal or in training. This targets people who knowingly repeat the behavior. The law protects access for people with disabilities.
