Dock roofs require insurance and liability
Beginning July 1, 2025, installing a private dock roof under this law requires dock liability insurance. Coverage must be at least $1 million per incident. The private dock owner is responsible for any damage the roof causes. The law does not state insurance prices or set a dollar limit on damages.
Lake associations can add dock-roof restrictions
Beginning July 1, 2025, qualifying Iowa lake associations can add restrictions and requirements for building private dock roofs. This authority applies despite other laws that say otherwise. The group must be a chapter 504 nonprofit corporation named as an association. It must manage a community in a subdivision next to or bordering a public lake. Added rules apply only to the association's members and their guests.
Dock permit holders can add roofs
Beginning July 1, 2025, Iowa allows valid class I or class III dock permit holders to roof private boat slips or hoists. The roof must be built above the slip or hoist using rust-resistant materials. It cannot exceed 30 feet wide or 20 feet above the normal surrounding water level. It cannot be used for sleeping or living.
